La Jetee

The French New Wave filmmaker Chris Marker (a pseudonym—his real name is Christian François Bouche-Villeneuve) was once told by a colleague that a film must consist of moving images. Accepting the challenge, Marker made La Jetée (The Pier), a post-apocalyptic, time-travel story made up almost entirely of black and white still images. Simultaneously philosophical and frightening, La Jetée deeply influenced Monty Python alumnus, Terry Gilliam. In fact, the basic plot of Gilliam's film, 12 Monkeys is structured after La Jetée.

I unabashedly recommend this film, at the very least, for it's innovative plot and style. Clocking in at 28 minutes, La Jetée graceful, compelling, and slightly strange.
